What are the signs and symptoms?
Pilonidal sinus can start off as a small painless lump and may not cause any symptoms. However, once it becomes infected, it becomes inflamed and fills with pus and develops into a painful cyst.
Over a few days you may also experience symptoms like:
- Pain, redness, and swelling
- Blood, pus or foul smelling drainage
- Protruding hair from the cyst
- Fever, not found in everyone
The above symptoms can be rather quick in onset. More than one sinus tract can form at the site of infection. The pain can be severe and you may experience pain with sitting or standing. The pain can affect your ability to perform your daily activities and can worsen without treatment.
Apart from the above symptoms, pilonidal sinus can cause other complications such as recurrence of the pilonidal sinus even after surgery and wound infection.
If you experience the above symptoms, you should see your doctor right away to make a diagnosis and prevent further worsening of your condition.
